Tens of thousands of people demonstrated in Bremen on Sunday against right-wing extremism and for democracy.
According to police estimates, between 35,000 and 40,000 people gathered for the “Loud Against the Right” rally.
The organizers spoke of around 50,000 participants.
Bremen - The gathering on the Domshof spread to the adjacent areas such as the market square, as the police announced.
Buses and trams would have to take detours because they couldn't get through the crowds in the old town.
Drivers should avoid the area if possible.
“The whole of Bremen hates the AfD,” shouted chants during the rally.
“All together against fascism.” Participants held up signs with slogans like “Apple sauce instead of fascism” or “I only think right-wing extremists are good at Werder.”
Bremen's Prime Minister Andreas Bovenschulte and Interior Senator Ulrich Mäurer (both SPD) had also announced their coming.
Parties, unions, companies and Bundesliga soccer team Werder Bremen called for participation in the meeting.
Two private individuals registered for the demo in Bremen - initially with 500 participants, later they expected 5,000 to 10,000 people.
