Thomas Bacher was largely invisible during the election campaign in Kochel.

The CSU candidate should explain his behavior not only to his voters and his party, but to all Kochler residents.

A comment from editor Christiane Mühlbauer.

Imagine it's an election campaign and the candidate goes into hiding: It was quite remarkable what happened in the mayoral election campaign in Kochel in the last few weeks.

While Rosi Marksteiner (center) and Jens Müller (UWK) were promoting their program and are now in the runoff, there was no sign of CSU candidate Thomas Bacher.

Only at the panel discussion in our newspaper shortly before Christmas did he publicly answer questions about how he imagines Kochel's future.

Mayoral election in Kochel: Bacher's nomination was actually a good decision

Now one would be tempted to say that a CSU candidate could certainly take the view that winning the election would be “a great Oktoberfest”.

Bacher's nomination was actually a good decision - as treasurer in Kochel, he has had comprehensive insights into many areas for years and is familiar with administrative processes.

In principle, Bacher could have easily put his competitors in his pocket with an appropriately conducted election campaign.

But he didn't - he simply made himself invisible.

It's not just in Kochel that people are wondering why.

Was the 28-year-old perhaps afraid of his own courage?

If he really didn't want to hold the office, it would have been fair to admit that and back down.

This is painful, but honest.

And if he had done it in time, it would have given the Kochler CSU the opportunity to look for an alternative.

The behavior of the CSU candidate has damaged trust in politics

It wouldn't have been the first time for the CSU in the district to lose a candidate.

In 2013, for example, Werner Weindl canceled his candidacy for district administrator.

That was surprising, but a clear cut.

Bacher, on the other hand, drove “the thing” into the wall with his eyes open and has now embarrassed the entire local association.

But you also have to ask the question: Why didn't anyone obviously intervene?

And: What support does the Benediktbeurener have in the Kochler CSU?

And there's something else that shouldn't be overlooked: the fact that people vote today is no longer a given.

This was also shown by the election in Kochel with a turnout of less than 60 percent.

Local politics is the lowest level - people know each other, can talk to each other, trust each other.

So if someone stands for election at this level and then disappears like that, it damages this trust immensely.

It's grist for the mill of those who don't care about elections and politics.

There is a lot of speculation.

That's why it would be all the more important that Bacher explains his behavior not only to his voters and his party, but to all Kochlers.

It's not too late for that yet.
