At the beginning of 2024, the child allowance was increased.

However, not everyone is entitled to it.

Anyone submitting an application should keep something important in mind.

Hamm – The child allowance was increased from 250 euros per month to up to 292 euros per month in 2024.

It is one of several changes in 2024, as

wa.de

reports.

It is applied for at the family fund – and approved if you meet the necessary requirements.

“To be eligible, you must earn at least 600 euros gross as a single parent and at least 900 euros gross as a parent couple,” explains the consumer advice center.

But that's not all.

Child allowance increased: Who is entitled and what should be included in the application

The child allowance is a social benefit that should not be confused with child benefit.

The child allowance is also granted for low incomes.

The supplement is available to everyone whose income is not enough for the entire family.

The government once introduced it to prevent child poverty.

Who is entitled to child allowance?

However, not everyone who can prove a low income automatically receives the child allowance.

Rather, various requirements must be met.

According to the consumer advice center, in order to claim the child allowance, the following must be met:

  • You are a single parent and earn at least 600 euros gross per month.

  • With a partner you can be entitled to a gross income of 900 euros or more.

  • The child must live in your household.

  • The child must be younger than 25 years.

  • You receive child benefit.

  • Your income, together with the child allowance and, if applicable, housing benefit, must also be high enough to cover your living expenses.

No child allowance if assets are too high

Parents who own their own home could have problems getting the child allowance.

“You will not receive a child allowance if your assets are too high.

The asset exemption limit is 55,000 euros for two people in the household and 15,000 euros for each additional household member,” explains the consumer advice center.

You can easily find out whether you are entitled to it using the KiZ guide from the Federal Employment Agency.

Basic child support instead of child allowance?

The consumer advice center writes: “The planned basic child protection will not come in 2024.

The child allowance will therefore not yet be replaced by the basic child benefit in 2024.

But it could be included in the basic child benefit in 2025.”

Anyone who is entitled to child allowance should then have all the necessary forms ready and submit them.

According to the consumer advice center, these include:

  • Application form for the child allowance with attachments

  • Certificate of earnings from the employer

  • Proof of income such as pension, parental allowance or BAföG notification

  • If necessary, proof of maintenance (e.g. bank statements)

  • If applicable, housing benefit notice

  • Current proof of accommodation costs (e.g. rental certificate)

If the application is approved, people who also receive housing benefit and/or citizen's benefit should know: It is possible to receive housing benefit and child allowance at the same time.

Applying for housing benefit often also makes sense.

Receiving citizen's benefit, on the other hand, leads to exclusion from the child allowance.

The reason: Citizens' benefit also includes benefits for children.
