The president of the Protestant Federation of France (FPF) Christian Krieger on Monday deemed it “
inappropriate
” to include voluntary termination of pregnancy (IVG) in the Constitution, even though Protestants express “
no reservations
” on this right. .
“
Inscribing this right in the Constitution seems to me to be inappropriate
” because “
the Constitution is not intended to be the sanctuating vehicle of ethical laws, especially when it comes to laws which themselves provide for conscientious objection
” , he said during his vows.
However, he assured that the Protestants, "
in their vast majority
", expressed "
no reservations
" about this right and that "
if it were to be contested, they would expect their president to mobilize all his energy to defend it
".
President LR of the Senate Gérard Larcher, guest of honor at the ceremony, expressed his “
reservation
” on this development.
“
I am not sure that the Constitution should be a catalog of social and societal rights,
” he said.
The inclusion of abortion in the Constitution, promised by Emmanuel Macron, must be debated in the National Assembly on January 24 before being examined in the Senate where the right-wing majority has never hidden its skepticism, with a view to possible adoption by Congress in early March.
Denunciation of texts
On Sunday, opponents of abortion took advantage of their traditional “march for life” in Paris to denounce this constitutional reform project but also the future law on the end of life.
On this subject, Christian Krieger recalled that the FPF “
fully supports the development of palliative culture and considers it inappropriate to develop legislation
” even though the latest law on the subject “
remains largely unknown and little applied
”.
As for the immigration law, on which the Constitutional Council must rule on Thursday, Krieger deplored a text which “
violates the higher principles that we believed were protected after the Second World War
”.

Protestant associations will continue to provide an unconditional welcome
