The death of Franz Beckenbauer also brought back memories in Hausham: In August 1973, the Kaiser came to the central sports complex with FC Bayern for a charity game.

– The emperor had to fight.

A foot injury and heat-related circulatory problems overshadowed Franz Beckenbauer's appearance in his FC Bayern Munich's Bundesliga game against Fortuna Düsseldorf on Saturday, August 11, 1973. Despite the 3-1 home win, coach Udo Lattek also admitted after the final whistle: "We're not in In great shape.” Actually, a day of rest would have been good for the team before they met Real Madrid in Bilbao on Tuesday evening.

But Bayern had an appointment for Sunday that they didn't want to cancel: the charity friendly match against the then A-class club SG Hausham.

The reason: the official opening of the newly built central sports facility.

Beckenbauer's death also brought back memories of this special day in Hausham, reports SG chairwoman Natalia Grill.

The wife of the then player Erwin Lang sent her a color photo of her husband with the then 27-year-old Bayern captain Beckenbauer.

Reason enough for Grill to ask around a bit about the still-living alumni who were on the pitch against the stars back then.

A look into the archives of our newspaper completed the report on the major sporting event with more than 4,000 spectators.

Proceeds benefit the special needs school

Bayern President Wilhelm Neudecker was responsible for the appearance of the professional team, which was full of national players, the local newspaper reported on the game.

And also the fact that the Bavarians competed without a fee and so the net proceeds from the ticket revenue went to the neighboring special education center.

“Football, which is so often frowned upon, has made itself available here for humanitarian purposes,” Hausham Mayor Anton Weilmaier is quoted as saying, after the special school would later be named.

Meanwhile, the ball literally floated in from the sky: parachutist Wolfgang Nösl sailed down to the center line with the playground equipment.

Weilmaier presented Beckenbauer and Lattek with the municipal coat of arms cast in copper as an honorary gift - then the football finally started.

What the spectators didn't know was revealed by the Hausham team's left-back at the time, Toni Reheis: Before kick-off, Bayern representatives came into the SG dressing room and asked them to play "gentle" and avoid fouls.

They don't want to risk further injuries before the upcoming games.

FC Bayern wins 25:2

Nevertheless, the A-class team managed to keep the score 0-0 for a quarter of an hour.

After an own goal, of all things, all the barriers were broken and the Munich team, accustomed to success, set off fireworks - something that many fans certainly expected and perhaps secretly hoped for.

Under the direction of playmaker Beckenbauer, stars such as Uli Hoeneß, Gerd Müller and Paul Breitner were on the top scorer list several times.

The hosts were then granted two consolation goals, so that in the end it was 25:2 from FCB's point of view.

Klaus Leidgschwendner, who was a 13-year-old youth keeper for the Hausham team, knows how boring it must have been for his goalkeeper Sepp Maier at times and watched the game directly behind his idol's goal.

He asked him in his usual flippant manner if he would like to relieve him for a bit, as there wasn't much to do here anyway.

Sepp Maier in a good mood

It was also Sepp Maier who commented on the beer mugs that all Bayern players received from Weilmaier as a gift with the words: “But Mr. Mayor, the mug is empty and we are already thirsty.” The mayor countered dryly: “I would have filled it after the game, but your director forbade it.” The Spain game on Tuesday evening is too important.

This is probably why Müller, Maier and Kaiser Beckenbauer were only on the pitch for half a time.

Everyone was happy to take the time to take souvenir photos with the Hausham residents.
