A new option to deter thieves.
With its latest iOS 17.3 update, Apple is now offering a new feature that is supposed to prevent a thief in possession of your iPhone and your unlock code from accessing the contents of your device.
An additional layer of security allows you to lock access to certain settings and data when your iPhone is far from places you usually frequent, such as your work or home.
Better protected means of payment
For this, instead of using a classic unlocking code, Apple is introducing biometric identification, Touch ID or Face ID, for carrying out certain sensitive actions.
Jumble: the use of passwords stored in the iCloud keychain, the activation of saved payment methods or even the registration of a new bank card in Apple Pay.
In addition, this anti-theft device also introduces additional time to perform certain tasks, such as changing your password or your Apple ID.
So, you will have to authenticate the first time with Face ID or Touch ID, wait an hour, then authenticate a second time in the same way.
Here is the procedure to follow to activate this additional security option:
Install the iOS 17.3 update on your iPhone
Open
Settings
and go to the
Face ID and code menu
Authenticate using the unlock code to access options
Scroll down to
Protection if your device is stolen
Tap
Enable protection
In order to avoid any deactivation of the anti-theft, particularly under duress, Apple provides an unlimited security period if someone tries to deactivate the protection in an unfamiliar place.
