The police special operations command (SEK) seized a container from the doorstep of the man holed up in the Black Forest town of Unterkirnach.
A robot was used, as a police spokeswoman reported to the German Press Agency early on Tuesday evening.
There was initially no further information about the contents of the box that the man left in front of the door.
Unterkirnach - The operation is ongoing, said the spokeswoman.
A 62-year-old ex-soldier barricaded himself in the house in the community in the Schwarzwald-Baar district for hours.
The man is threatened with eviction.
The bailiff arrived, then the situation escalated.
The man threatened to set fire and burn the building down.
The police were on site with a large contingent.
