MontelongoChavarin is being held without bail at the Maguire Correctional Center in Redwood City.

He has not pleaded guilty nor has a hearing been scheduled in his case.

The arrest comes amid the anniversary of the shooting in which a man killed seven immigrants working and living on two farms in Half Moon Bay, on January 23, 2023. A grand jury on Friday indicted the suspect, a farm worker , with seven counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder.

San Mateo County Board of Supervisors member Ray Mueller, whose district includes Half Moon Bay, said the latest shooting was "another heartbreaking case of gun violence affecting our community just one year after the worst mass shooting in the history of the county.

"Our focus now is to ensure that community members have the resources they need while the sheriff's office works to bring those who carried out this act to justice," he said in a statement to NBC News.

Sheriff's Office deputies responded to reports of a shooting in the Moonridge housing community, according to the news release.

The victim was taken to the hospital.

After identifying MontelongoChavarin as a suspect, authorities obtained an arrest warrant Sunday and detained him without incident.

Detectives said they believe the attack was an

isolated incident

after conducting a preliminary investigation, and are asking the public to come forward with any information they have.

On the day of the arrest, the Half Moon Bay community held a vigil for the seven people who were murdered last year.

"

We are not going to forget the agricultural workers

. The healing process is going to take years. This is just a step forward," Half Moon Bay Mayor Joaquin Jimenez said at the event.
