Tamar, Ella, Shoshana, Alon, Hadar and Ilan - these are the most popular names in Israel among those named after trees and plants.

In a special project to mark the 10th of the Sabbath, beginning today, the National Fund for Israel and the Central Bureau of Statistics reveal the most common names among girls, children, women and men in Israel. From the names that came from the Bible, through those whose names were determined based on the unique color or smell of those plants , and to those who symbolize the settlement in the Land of Israel.

In first place among girls and women is the name Tamar, with 46,166 names.

In second place came the name Ella with 29,356, in third place Shoshana with 24,657, in fourth place Hadar with 16,156 and the opening five is rounded out by the name Hadas, with 15,589.

In first place among children and men is Alon, with 26,058 names.

In second place came Ilan, with 16,077, in third place Hashem Oren with 14,312, in fourth place Erez with 10,496 and the opening five, Soger Rotem, with 6,076.

"The rooted connection to the land is also expressed through naming the children after the trees with which the land was blessed," says KKL-Junk chairwoman Yifat Ovadia Loski.

"Nature has a wonderful quality of regeneration even from the most severe disasters, and calling our children the names of the plants of the Land of Israel is also a hope for the same renewal and growth that we hope and pray for in recent times."
