The people in the villages are poorer than ever, say the helpers from the Ebersberg district.

Among other things, hospital costs for the patients were covered.

District

- There are two main important findings that the helpers from the Ebersberg district gained during their most recent mission in Sierra Leone.

The work of the past few years is having an impact in the hospital in Lunsar.

“The overall impression of the clinic has improved significantly compared to the last few times,” says Ebersberg doctor Wolfgang Haller from the “Orthopedics for the Third World” association.

But, and this is the second impression, this only applies to the clinic.

All clinic costs for patients covered

The people in the villages are poorer than ever.

They cannot afford any clinical treatment, even at minimal prices.

Youth unemployment is high at around 50 to 60 percent, and the inflation rate is around 30 percent.

“For this reason, we have covered all clinic costs for patients with the exception of the small entrance fee.”

An employee at the clinic earns around 70 euros per month

Bioengineer Nils Niederstebruch from the Aßingen association Globolab, who, among other things, looks after the laboratory in the clinic in Lunsar, adds: “The country itself is in such a catastrophic state that I actually don't understand how the people there, even if they have a job , can survive.” An employee at the clinic currently earns around 70 euros per month.

However, prices for gasoline and other “luxury goods” correspond to those in Europe.

A bag of rice from China, domestic production is too expensive, costs 35 to 40 euros for around 50 kilos.

People “off the street” generally no longer come to the clinic, even if they are treated free of charge.

They simply didn't have the money to travel to the hospital.

Malnutrition is omnipresent

“There is certainly a very well-earning upper class,” says Niederstebruch.

“But there are very few people.” If you ask the “normal workers” in the clinic, such as laboratory technicians or nurses, how often they can afford a meal with chicken, the vast majority of them answer: “About once a month.”

The main food is still Chinese rice.

As a side dish there are only vegetable proteins in the form of cassava leaves (manioc) or potato cabbage.

Malnutrition and malnutrition are omnipresent.

Surgical staff are now well trained

The John of God Hospital in Lunsar is around 100 kilometers from the capital Freetown.

The clinic is run by the “Brothers of Mercy”, which has its headquarters in Spain.

From a purely medical point of view, there is a positive conclusion to the two-week stay of the team from the Ebersberg district: “The operating room staff are now well trained, the nurses on the ward were also committed and always pointed out problems and, above all, they asked questions and were eager to learn,” says orthopedist Haller.

First assignment for a doctor couple from Vagen

33 operations were performed.

The team included the couple Dr.

Monika and Dr.

Michael Strobelt from Vagen, a dentist and a pediatrician for the first time.

It was her first time working in an African country.

“We both found working under special circumstances and conditions in an interdisciplinary and international team to be very enriching and broadening our horizons and took home the impression that, despite the limited time, meaningful medical help could be provided,” said the couple at the end of the meeting Trip.

For Nils Niederstebruch and Doris Sixt (Ebersberg District Hospital), it was very reassuring to know that the local Globolab-trained employee Abdul is now “so well trained that he can handle microbiology all year round without any problems”.

Local doctors at the clinic are also requesting tests more and more frequently.
