For years, Stonehenge was the guarantee for the best rock for connoisseurs - including as a headliner at the Freising Old Town Festival and as a fixture at the Honky Tonk Pub Festival.

The cast at that time: Wolfgang Beck, Peter Sieber, Peter Gesierich, Stefan Rosinger, Michael Eckert and Julia Reichardt.

It shaped the sound of an entire Freising generation: the band Stonehenge.

The FT leafed through the archives of the formation founded in 1988.

Freising

– When you think of Freising, you probably first think of the tourist attractions such as the Diocesan Museum or the Asam building, which will soon be completed.

The cathedral city shines above all with musical heroes who have repeatedly founded and established new bands over the decades.

A formation that is surprisingly often forgotten in retrospect, although it undoubtedly shaped the sound of an entire Freising generation, is Stonehenge.

Guitarist Peter Gesierich's band archive shows that Stonehenge was not only an important part of the music scene at the time, but also a pioneer at a time when live concerts were part of the Freisinger's lifestyle.

The band was founded 35 years ago, but its echo still resonates today.

Hit the musical nerve

If a music fan listens through the blues/rock band's surviving oeuvre today, one thing quickly becomes apparent: Stonehenge hit the musical nerve very precisely when it was founded in 1988 - far from a musical fashion trend, but more like Back to the Roots , with a lot of his own verve and even more passion.

The formation was set up by Wolfgang “Stones” Beck and Peter Sieber, neither of whom were unknown in these times, but rather musical heroes who always know exactly what sound a city needs.

What must be marked as a milestone during this time, in addition to the ever-increasing success: their first disc “Hold on”, which is still sought after and loved in collector circles to this day.

While there was a creative break after around four years, and this was of course used extremely productively by the individual band members, Stonehenge made a furious and surprising comeback in 1998 - in true style and style with a concert in the Lindenkeller.

And this can also be found in the band archive: Stonehenge has been the guarantee for rock at the highest level for years - including as a headliner at the Freising Old Town Festival and as a fixture at the Honky Tonk Pub Festival.

The cast at that time: Wolfgang Beck, Peter Sieber, Peter Gesierich, Stefan Rosinger, Michael Eckert and Julia Reichardt.

Always inspired by the fans

This is how the Freisinger Tagblatt judged the comeback in 1998: “Better than ever before – the legend lives!” And the fact that Stonehenge actually passed as a legend among those in the know becomes clear and understandable when looking through the countless newspaper reports.

Inspired by the great recognition from fans and a number 1 hit on radio station M1, the logical consequence was to bring another recording onto the market with the CD production “Home”.

My news

  • “Rust noses” are under observation: stains deface freshly painted cathedral tower readings

  • The city of Moosburg is struggling with construction delays - the new shopping center is also on hold

  • Between demolition and renovation: the future of two residential buildings in Freising is uncertain

  • Popular Freising festival on the verge of a comeback: PLUS planning is in full swing

  • 23-year-old died in accident on B13: Court rejects probation for fatal driver (63).

  • Realschule Gute Änger welcomes guest students from Korea: read “A unique opportunity”.

Perhaps the most beautiful newspaper reports from back then: Stonehenge on a floating stage in Lake Kranzberger, when they played with other bands for seriously ill children, and the note that a concert in a newly opened Bistro in Freising was stopped by the police because permission was missing had.

What becomes clear here is how much rock 'n' roll was part of everyday life in the cathedral city back then - both scenarios are actually no longer conceivable, simply because there are hardly any opportunities to perform anymore.

However, fate was not particularly kind to Stonehenge, as the charismatic singer and blues harp legend Peter Sieber died, as did the following singer Willi Sammann.

“Stonehenge” becomes “Jumpin' Jacks”

What many people probably don't know: Another legendary band emerged from the Stonehenge formation by chance due to a birthday concert for a friend and Stones fan after the singers' losses, namely the Jumpin' Jacks with frontman Günter Janovsky.

Stonehenge have therefore directly and indirectly shaped the sound of the cathedral city for decades - a sound that still resonates today, especially due to the enormous spirit of Peter Sieber, as well as Wolfgang Beck, and has shaped the style of bands that are on stage today.
