The municipality of Karlsfeld and MAN want to start a heating project: hot water is to be fetched from a depth of 2,000 meters.

Karlsfeld – In an unprecedented collaboration with the bus and truck manufacturer MAN Truck & Bus SE, Karlsfeld promotes the “Bavarian petroleum”, the hot water from a depth of 2000 meters, and uses it to warm not only factory halls and corporate offices, but also parts the neighboring community of Karlsfeld?

With the most recent local council meeting on Thursday, at least decisive steps were taken towards such a joint geothermal energy project.

It would be a first-of-its-kind heating network

Why does MAN want to work with the municipality of Karlsfeld in this unique heating network?

They had already looked into geothermal energy 20 years ago, but then refrained from drilling for water because of the high financial risk.

Instead, community fathers and mothers decided in favor of the existing, mostly wood-fired combined heat and power plant with 30 gigawatt hours (GWh) and a district heating network that is currently 15 kilometers long.

30 percent of Karlsfeld, including all large public buildings and schools, are connected to this.

This know-how now benefits the community as a possible partner.

“I could well imagine MAN as a partner,” said Mayor Stefan Kolbe (CSU) at the meeting.

According to Benedikt Nesselhauf, Public Affairs & Reputation Officer, MAN would like to convert its gas-heated factories and offices to sustainable geothermal energy with a heat requirement of up to 50 GWh.

For this project, MAN had secured the Karlsfeld-Ost mining permit fields and the Karlsfeld-Nord claim.

If all approvals were received in the fall, drilling could begin there in 2025, according to geothermal energy expert Christian Nolte.

The Karlsfeld district heating network could be linked to MAN's geothermal energy as early as summer 2026. The local councilors expressed themselves positively about the possible joint project.

But first the technology needs to be clarified and then an operator model needs to be discussed, said the head of municipal utilities, Martin Eberle.
