The Hamburg band “Kettcar” has released a new single: “Munich”.

Bassist Reimer Bustorff talks about the background of the song, which is about everyday racism.

Munich - After the demos against the right in the past few days, in which hundreds of thousands of people took part in Munich, this single came at a suitable time thematically: On Friday (January 19th) the band Kettcar released the song “Munich” as the first of their new one Album released.

It's about everyday racism and experiences of discrimination, such as the usually not nice question: "Where did you actually come from?" The accompanying video was filmed at various NSU crime scenes: Dortmund, Kassel, Nuremberg, Hamburg, Rostock, Munich.

The song by the band Kettcar couldn't have been released at a better time

Kettcar bassist Reimer Bustorff wrote the text: “I played a lot of football in my youth, often with boys whose parents had a migration background.

During this time I was also close to Yachi, whose parents were from Turkey,” he tells our editorial team.

Yachi is the main character in the song, he is the one who faces discrimination on a daily basis.

The title of the single is “Munich” – but the location shouldn’t really matter, says Reimer Burstorff

And why the title “Munich”?

“It could also have been Hannover Groß Buchholz, Cologne Holweide or Hamburg Eppendorf,” says the bassist.

“It was important to us that the location basically didn’t play a role.” To distract from the autobiographical aspect, they chose Munich-Harlaching because it was the furthest away.

It was a coincidence that the timing of the publication coincided so well with current events.

It was already clear in mid-December last year that the first single would be “Munich,” says Bustorff.

“Now everything is sadly coming together like this, although I have to say that the song would have been relevant at any other time.”

Kettcar wants to take a stance against the right

Everyday racism is firmly anchored in our society, says Bustorff.

“For me, our song can play in any decade since the early 1980s.”

The band Kettcar is committed to taking a stand against right-wing radicalism and racism and for humanity.

“It is good and important that many people show that they do not take it for granted how attempts are being made to establish right-wing, radical, ethnic ideas in the middle of society,” says Bustorff.

He hopes that many people will continue to be vigilant against right-wing activities.

The band's new album is called “Good Mood Unfairly Distributed” and will be released on April 5th.
