Holocaust survivors remember their honor every day of the year and not just on Remembrance Day, Life Senator Liliana Segre said on Saturday.
"I am not suited to talking about January 27, because those who have been through what I went through do not wait for that date to remember what happened a lifetime ago. This is the truth," said Segre, aged 93, arriving at the State University of Milanto receive an honorary degree in Historical Sciences.
"They remember 365 days a year, not just on 27 January," she added.
"And every day may be the same or different, but that place is never forgotten," she concluded.
Born in 1930 into a Milanese family of Jewish origins, in 1938 Segre was expelled from her primary school after the promulgation of the Italian Racial Laws.
In 1943, she was arrested with her family and the following January she was deported from Milan to the Auschwitz concentration camp, where she was the only person among her relatives to survive.
Following the end of World War II in 1945 she returned to Milanand, after decades of silence, in the 1990s she started to speak to the public, especially young students, about her experience of her.
Segre was named senator for life by President Sergio Mattarella in 2018 for outstanding patriotic merits in the social field.
