Cycle by mountain bike across the Alps to Lake Garda.

And all within six days.

16 students from the Gabriel-von-Seidl-Gymnasium have taken on this sporting challenge.

You can follow the tour on Instagram.

Bad Tölz – As part of a project seminar by Andreas Polke, the eleventh graders want to dare to cross the Alps this summer.

Fidel Schwichtenberg is also there.

“I’m really looking forward to it finally starting,” says the 17-year-old.

Taking such a long bike ride with your school friends is a special experience.

However, it remains to be seen whether Andreas Polke will join in the cycling.

Due to injury, Roman Ederl has currently taken over as seminar representative.

Everything organized by yourself

The Q11 students organized the entire Alpine crossing themselves in small working groups.

The majority of things have already been prepared, from route planning to finding sponsors.

It starts on June 9th in Wildbad Kreuth.

From there the first stage leads to Mayrhofen in the Zillertal.

The next day we continue to Vipiteno and from there to Lana near Bolzano.

On the fourth section of the route, the students drive to Tueno in Trentino and from there to Andalo before reaching their destination in Torbole on Lake Garda on the last day.

Managing your energy is the most important thing

The 300 kilometer long route is quite challenging, with some sections having to climb several hundred meters in altitude.

In the event that the planned route turns out to be too demanding or the weather doesn't cooperate, suitable alternative routes have already been found.

The main challenge is to manage your energy over several days and not go full throttle on the first day.

Special training program

To ensure that the students have the appropriate physical fitness for the tour, the high school students have come up with a training program.

In addition to workouts to strengthen the leg muscles and core stabilization, fitness should also be improved.

At best, tours lasting several days should be undertaken in the spring in order to get a first impression of the stress that awaits the young people on their demanding Alpine crossing.

In addition to a bicycle repair course to refresh the most important basics, technical training is also planned so that you are prepared for the more demanding trails.

You will stay overnight in hotels

When it comes to accommodation, the group decided against huts and instead stayed in hotels in the valley.

The advantage: less luggage and therefore less weight on your back.

In addition to appropriate clothing and small food rations, repair tools and first aid kits are on the packing list.

The students have already booked some of the hotels, while others are still waiting to hear back.

When making their selection, in addition to a reasonable price, they also made sure that the hotel had a bicycle room where mountain bikes could be safely stored overnight.

Breakfast is also usually included.

The cost of accommodation is around 300 euros per person.

Sponsors make the project possible

For this reason, the high school students started looking for sponsors.

With success: Among other things, the students receive helmets from the sporting goods manufacturer Alpina and other bicycle accessories sponsored by bike shops in the region, reports Fidel Schwichtenberg.

The high school students receive financial support for their project from the Raiffeisenbank and the Sparkasse.

“But we are still looking for sponsors,” said the 17-year-old student.
