Charlotte Prokscha (13) plays chess very successfully.

The Geretsrieder native goes to tournaments almost every weekend.

In the current season she moved to FC Bayern.

Geretsried – Many young people are drawn to getting out after school and homework. Charlotte Prokscha is attracted by a board with 64 fields: the 13-year-old has dedicated herself to chess.

The Geretsrieder native now plays for the FC Bayern chess team and in the Bavarian Chess Youth squad.

“No two games are the same,” enthuses the eighth-grader.

“Even if the first move is the same, the game can develop in a completely different direction.”

Geretsried: Charlotte Prokscha (13) has dedicated herself to chess

Charlotte learned the so-called game of kings in preschool.

“Somehow my interest in chess faded after that.” It wasn’t until the Geretsried high school student was on treatment in 2018 that she came into contact with the board game again.

“When my grandfather read in the newspaper that there was a chess department at TuS Geretsried, I just went there.”

The trainers quickly realized that there was potential in the young Geretsried woman.

A little later, the girl practiced at the Wolfratshausen Chess Club in parallel to TuS, and she also took private chess lessons.

Nevertheless, not everything always went smoothly.

At her first “real” tournament in Garching, the girl lost her first two games.

“My parents briefly doubted whether it was the right decision to send me to the tournament,” says Charlotte and laughs.

But the Geretsried woman did not allow herself to be discouraged.

In the following three games she checkmated her opponents.

A little later, the chess newcomer achieved second place at the Upper Bavarian Championship.

Then came Corona.

Face-to-face lessons became online training.

The student came across the chess club in Garching because of its good online offerings.

Initially, Charlotte was allowed to train with them, but eventually she received an offer as a guest player for the club.

She accepted.

She has just returned with her family from the four-day German Championship for players under 20 in Magdeburg.

Her siblings Marlene (12) and Kilian (8) have also caught the chess fever.

Charlotte and Marlene had seven games to play within four days.

They can drag on.

“My friend’s game lasted almost six hours,” says the 13-year-old.

In such cases, Charlotte helps to maintain concentration by splashing cold water on her face.

Before each tournament, the siblings receive a gym bag with “nerve food” from their parents, filled with nuts, energy bars, cola and lucky charms.

For a while, Sister Marlene took her stuffed animals with her, which she set up on the chessboard.

“That alone completely unsettled her opponent,” says Charlotte Prokscha, grinning.

My dream is to play in the Bundesliga or win the Bavarian championship.

This season - which started after the summer holidays - the 13-year-old moved from Garching to FC Bayern.

She currently trains five times a week.

Still mostly online.

The many appointments are a challenge for the young person: “I have German at school on Mondays and Fridays.

That's why I often have to do my homework while driving to tournaments.” She has also had to turn down one or two party invitations.

“But luckily my friends understand that.” A sacrifice she accepts for the sake of her passion.

The 13-year-old has a clear goal: “My dream is to one day play in the Bundesliga or win the Bavarian championship.”
