In video: Interview with football commentator Zavik Zeltzer/Editor: Shmulik Cohen Luz
Unlike many other footballers, when 80-year-old Zavik Seltzer decided to hang up his shoes and retire from active play somewhere in 1976, he really didn't rest on his laurels.
He began coaching Maccabi Petah Tikva immediately after his retirement, and recorded a glorious coaching career, when, among other things, he coached Maccabi Tel Aviv, Beitar Jerusalem and Israel's youth team.
Even after his coaching career, he did not stop, and even though he was at an age when many retire , he didn't stop working. Towards the year 2010, he started serving as a senior commentator on Charlton's sports channels, and since then he has been commentating games on a regular basis, until these days.
"I recommend people of the third age to be constantly connected and alert"/Danny Maron
"I feel that we, the senior citizens, have a lot to give from experience," says Seltzer in an interview.
"If you do what you love and stay busy all the time, you can help a lot of people. I recommend people in their third years to be constantly connected and alert. People like me, veterans, experienced, have a lot to give and they want to give. There are those who are waiting to be asked And I say, don't wait. You go and tell them. After they get to know you and see who you are, they will come to you and that's how I feel."
"October 7th was a shock," Seltzer recalled on that Black Sabbath.
"You don't understand where this thing comes from. The games were canceled and only then do you start to digest. Returning to the studio was not easy; suddenly you start talking about football when people are fighting and people fall and people are injured. It helped me personally, because I knew I was helping other people by doing so. I'm sure That this thing brought sanity, because we understood that we must continue to give people hope as well and to return to being what we were."
"I have known Zavik for 20 years," says broadcaster Liran Shechner.
"Every time there is a new surprise with him - sometimes volunteering, sometimes an activity and sometimes some kind of donation. The world does not belong to young people and I say there is no substitute for experience."
What does he think about the saying "the world belongs to the young", how did October 7th affect him and what tips does he have for seniors?
