How can traffic in the south of Munich be reduced?

The city has concrete ideas for this - for example with higher frequency on the U1.

Munich - In order to better relieve the traffic junction of Candidtunnel/Tegernseer Landstrasse and McGraw-Graben in the future, the mobility department wants to expand and condense cycle times.

This emerges from an answer to a city council request from the FDP and the Bavarian Party.

Among other things, the politicians wanted to know how the city wants to ensure that around 70,000 additional places in local public transport can be created in the south of Munich every day by expanding the service.

The subway plan for the south of Munich: extending subway line 5 to Taufkirchen will be important

From the administration's perspective, the extension of the U5 to Taufkirchen plays a major role.

Because the subway (with the C2 train) in the southern section, from Neuperlach Süd, can offer 5,640 additional seats per hour and direction every ten minutes.

“With 18 hours of operation, this corresponds to an increase of 203,040 places,” says the department’s letter.

North of Neuperlach Süd, however, the U5 is to be condensed to three trips every ten minutes in the long term.

This would be an additional six trips per hour in each direction within six hours, which corresponds to 67,680 places per day.

In the long term, U1 will run every five minutes: That will mean 169,200 more places for local public transport

In the medium term, the U1 to Mangfallplatz should also run every five minutes during peak hours and in the long term all day long.

This would also allow for 67,680 more places.

In the long term, this would even correspond to an increase of 169,200 places at a five-minute interval between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m.

Also in the planning: The partial two-lane expansion of the S7 between Giesing and Kreuzstrasse.

“In the future, this will enable a 15-minute cycle and thus one additional trip per hour and direction,” writes the department.

This in turn would correspond to an increase of 2,176 seats per hour - assuming that a two-part S-Bahn trainset of the BR423 type is used.

“Assuming 18 hours of operation, we get 39,168 additional places.”

The subway plan for the south of Munich: Further express bus lines and a tram tangent are also being planned

In addition to these expanded offers, there are additional measures that can have a relieving effect.

Among other things, the electrification of the Oberland routes and the realization of the Gasteig – Ramersdorf – Neuperlach tram are mentioned.

An express bus line X204 Putzbrunn – Ottobrunn – Unterhaching – Tegernseer Landstrasse – Brudermühlstrasse – St. Achaz could also help.

This would create around 4,500 public transport spaces per day and direction.
