A large ship collided with a bridge near Baltimore, causing cars carrying people to fall into the water.

Baltimore – There are dramatic moments currently taking place in Baltimore, USA.
A ship struck the pillar of a four-lane automobile bridge over the Patapsco River early this morning, causing it to partially collapse.
This was announced by the Maryland State Transportation Authority in the early hours of Tuesday morning (local time).
There have been no reports of deaths or injuries so far.

For a long time there was talk of seven people in the Patapsco River, but the fire department revised this number significantly upwards.
She assumes there are at least 20 people in the nine degree Celsius cold water.
Rescue efforts are underway, and a diving team is also on site.
The number of vehicles that were on the bridge at the time of the collapse was initially uncertain.

The first emergency calls came in around 1:30 a.m., the
New York Times
and CBS News reported, citing the Coast Guard and fire departments.
The communications director of the Baltimore Fire Department confirms to the BBC that the bridge was hit by a “large ship”.

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott said on X (formerly Twitter) that he was aware of the Key Bridge incident and was on his way there.
“Emergency crews are on site and rescue work is underway.”

According to the Maryland Transportation Authority, the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which runs over the port of the northeastern metropolis, is more than 2.5 kilometers long and has four lanes.
The accident on the Patapsco River is reminiscent of an incident in February in China.
There, a freighter collided with a bridge, cars crashed and several people died.
