The Allgäu is one of the safest regions in Bavaria.

That's what police chief Dr. said now.

Claudia Strößner presenting the crime statistics for the past year.

Memmingen/Allgäu -

Last week, Police Chief Dr.

Claudia Strößner and Chief Criminal Officer Hans Willbold presented the crime statistics of the Swabia South/West Police Headquarters for 2023.

After that, the police registered less than 40,000 crimes in our region.

With a slight increase of 0.8 percent compared to 2022, they are at the same level as the previous year.

“You live in one of the safest regions in Bavaria,” the police chief was able to announce.

This is also shown by the decrease in crime frequency from 3,534 to 3,486.

This number expresses the probability of becoming a victim of a crime and makes different regions comparable.

It is calculated from the number of known cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

The clearance rate improved slightly to 74.0 percent of all reported crimes.

“The very good clearance rate and also the frequency number impressively demonstrate the successful work of the police in the protection area of the Swabia South/West Police Headquarters,” summarized Dr.

Strößner together.

In the area of street crime, the number of crimes (2023: 4,930 cases, minus 164 compared to 2022) is almost at the same level compared to the previous year.

Around nine out of ten cases relate to the offenses of street theft and property damage.

Street crime encompasses a selection of individual crimes that are committed in public spaces.

This includes, for example, damage to property - including motor vehicles, bicycle theft, street theft or street robbery.

Fewer “crimes against life”

The area of violent crime (2023: 1,295 cases, minus 15 cases compared to 2022) is made up of several crimes: These include the offenses of murder, manslaughter and rape as well as dangerous and serious bodily harm.

These crimes account for 3.3 percent of total crime.

The probability of becoming a victim of a violent act is therefore considered to be low.

Fortunately, there has been a significant decline in “crimes against life” (minus 13.5 percent) and offenses against sexual self-determination (minus 10.7 percent).

Significant increase in residential burglaries

The crime of robbery, on the other hand, increased significantly, with an increase of over a quarter compared to 2022.

Last year, residential burglaries were reported in 217 cases, also a significant increase of over 25 percent compared to the previous year.

However, it has not yet reached the level of 2019 with 273 cases.

Hans Willbold pointed out the free police advice centers.

At least half of the reported residential burglaries fail due to security techniques.

As in the previous year, the largest proportion of crimes against sexual self-determination is the distribution of child pornography.

There has been a decline of a good third to 394 cases.

The proportion of suspects between the ages of 14 and 21 fell from 62.5 percent (2022) to 38.1 percent.

Here, the numerous prevention campaigns among young people and adolescents seem to have a positive effect on the development of the numbers compared to the previous year.

There has also been a significant decrease in rape cases, from almost a third to 88 crimes.

In more than three quarters of all cases there was a formal or informal prior relationship between the victim and the perpetrator.

According to the police, the risk of being raped by an unknown person is low in our region.

The majority of drug-related crime (3,476 cases in 2023) can be traced back to the use of cannabis.

It remains to be seen what effect the legal reform on impunity for cannabis possession will have.

However, the police say they expect increased enforcement and control costs in the future.
