At Bordeaux Montaigne University, the parking lot has been occupied by a community of travelers since the beginning of March. A recurring presence that despairs some students, who say they “fear” for their safety.

In the pedestrian corridor which leads to the lecture halls and student halls, two young children ride an electric quad at full speed. The video, filmed by a Bordeaux member of the National Interuniversity Union (UNI) and published on X, is accompanied by the link to a petition, already signed by more than 200 people according to the student union.

“It revolts me to see this, they do what they want! There is no security and the presidency continues to sweep everything under the rug by burying its head in the sand

,” scolds its president, Dominique Organ. While caravans had already set up there in January, a new community of travelers set up their camp in the staff parking lot of Bordeaux Montaigne University at the beginning of March. An additional intrusion which seriously exceeds some students.

“They set up in the university car parks when we already have difficulty parking, they use the premises and the toilets, several people have told us about intimidation... A feeling of insecurity is added to the one that already exists due to the presence of far-left activists

,” argues the opposition union. Increased security staff, installation of video surveillance cameras... He calls for additional measures so that

"travelers are prevented from returning after their departure"

Evacuation and reinforcement

“There were a few incidents”

, the University of Bordeaux Montaigne immediately admits,

“a teacher was verbally attacked and students complained about the more or less attached dogs circulating on campus”

. Also emphasizing that the university elections are in progress, the management specifies

"not having the means to do anything other than to increase the number of reports and complaints to the police, while carrying out mediation work"

. However,

“the dialogue”

is more or less

“complex”

depending on

“the groups that are established”

. Also contacted on the subject, the UNEF did not respond to our requests.

“Our priority is to secure the surroundings of buildings by anticipating movements and intrusions in other places

,” adds the institution, which voted a budget of 400,000 euros in 2023 to equip itself with anti- invasion. An envelope revised upwards in 2024, which should allow the first projects to be completed within the year. Subject to legal expulsion deadlines, the university also recognizes that the installation of surveillance cameras is

“a subject raised by both teaching staff and students and that it must be discussed”

. In the meantime, the three security agents who monitor the campus daily are provided with reinforcements as soon as the situation requires it and allows it, particularly in the evenings and on weekends.

And if a lasting solution to prevent intrusions is still being sought, this Traveler camp should be evacuated next week. The Gironde prefecture confirms to Le

Figaro

that it received, on Monday, a request for assistance from the public force to vacate the premises... Until further notice.
