Four people died and five were injured Wednesday in stabbings in northern Illinois, authorities said.
A suspect is in police custody and is being questioned, Rockford Police Chief Carla Redd said. She added that one of the injured people was in critical condition.
Rockford has about 150,000 residents and is 90 miles (145 kilometers) northwest of Chicago.

“My heart goes out right now to the families who have suffered a loss,” Redd said during a news conference.
Rockford police received a medical call at 1:14 p.m. local time, followed by other calls to police and paramedics, Redd reported. “We have four individuals who have died. We have one that is in critical condition at this time and four others that are in stable condition,” he said.
“We have a suspect in custody who is being questioned now. “We do not believe there are other suspects at large at this time,” they added.
