His bronze works of art can still be found everywhere in the Munich district: Today the well-known Grünwald sculptor Ivo Krizan would have been 90 years old.

Grünwald

- Ivo Krizan's bronze works of art will probably continue to visually determine the identity of some communities, especially in the southern district of Munich, for a hundred years to come. Today, Thursday, March 28th, the man from Grünwald would have been 90 years old, and his wife Cindy Wallin cherishes his memory. His pictures continue to decorate the work studio and provide evidence of his work.

Sculpture stolen from grave

Just a few days ago, a discovery at the Grünwald forest cemetery caused horror. Unknown people had dismantled a bronze sculpture on the deceased's grave, which had been lovingly made based on the artist's model. The non-material loss far exceeds the material damage.

Krizan's figures can be found in many places

Fortunately, valuable artistic substance has been preserved not only in Grünwald, but also in Sauerlach, Oberhaching and Unterhaching, which Ivo Krizan created from his imagination over years of effort and fine work: the group of musicians in front of the Römerschanz community center, for example. It gives a good impression of how the Czech native works. The anatomical principles under the robes are well studied, the proportions are correct, and genre painting is expressed in the sculpture. The figures are silent companions through the four seasons and gain additional contour, especially in the twilight of the winter sun.

Special encounter with the Pope

Shortly after the Prague Spring, Ivo Krizan emigrated from the Czech Republic to Germany and, in addition to his artistic talent, also practiced his profession as a cameraman. He had a unique encounter “among Slavs” 43 years ago in Rome, more precisely in the Vatican. The cameraman came here with a group, the first German television team under director Harald Schott to receive permission to film. After the shooting, Pope John Paul II came into the hall where Ivo Krizan was and he immediately took the initiative. He gladly seized the opportunity. So he walked up to the pontiff, introduced himself in Czech and had the pope's attention all to himself. He was granted almost ten minutes with the head of the Catholic Church. Ten minutes that Ivo Krizan should never forget.

Moments of experience, works of creation. The sculptor's figures, such as the troupe of musicians in front of the Forstner Hall in Oberhaching, all exude an aura that is immediately reminiscent of Ivo Krizan: of his cheerful nature and the experienced, scrutinizing eye of the observer. Immediately he stands there as if alive.
