A couple dies because they harvest and eat a poisonous plant instead of wild garlic. The dangerous doppelgangers can be recognized based on a few characteristics.
Deutsch-Wagram – In spring you can find wild garlic growing wild in many places. Once harvested, it tastes wonderful as a wild garlic pesto or as a soup. A couple in the Austrian community of Deutsch-Wagram also processed their harvest for the latter.

But what ended up in her cooking pot wasn't wild garlic. Instead, the couple had unknowingly collected one of their dangerous doppelgangers, as
today.at
reports. Above all, these are autumn crocus and lily of the valley. Both are highly toxic.

Austrians eat poisonous plant they think is wild garlic - days later they are dead
The couple quickly felt this too. “On March 11, rescue took an elderly couple to the hospital with signs of food poisoning,” the Red Cross confirmed the incident.
At that time, the two patients were doing poorly, but their condition was stable. However, it quickly deteriorated in the hospital. A few days later, both spouses died,

The poisonous lookalikes of wild garlic – this is how you can recognize them
Both autumn crocus and lily of the valley look very similar to wild garlic. However, while wild garlic can be eaten safely, the other two plants are highly poisonous. With a close look and a quick smell test, you can quickly identify whether it is actually real wild garlic.
A clear test is
to rub a leaf between your fingers
. If it smells like
garlic
, you definitely have
wild garlic
in your hand. However, identification should not be based solely on this. Although only wild garlic smells like that, the scent is so strong that there is a risk of getting a false positive if you test different plants multiple times. Therefore, identification should never be made using this test alone.
The leaves and flowers can provide further signs.
Wild garlic
has
white, star-shaped flowers
and
broad, oval leaves
with a
matte underside
that grow directly from the stem. Lily of the valley also has white flowers, although they are bell-shaped. The leaves are also broadly oval, but have a shiny underside. They also grow across stems. Autumn Citroses have a purple flower. Its leaves are oblong-oval with a shiny underside; they grow out of the rosette without stalks.

Confusion with wild garlic is always a problem - BfR advises purchasing it from controlled cultivation
These two plants are visually very similar to wild garlic and are therefore often confused with it. According to the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR), dangerous mix-ups occur particularly in April and May. The institute therefore advises that you familiarize yourself thoroughly with the characteristics of the plant in order to avoid such a potentially fatal mishap. Or better yet, get the vegetables from the grocery store or grow them in your own garden.
The wild garlic season is short. If you don't want to go without it for the rest of the year or have simply collected too much, you can easily preserve wild garlic. (
