It is perhaps the most extraordinary project that the ambitious artist group “Marzling Kreativ” has ever put together: an impressive wooden cross.

Marzling

- What is succinctly combined with the work of art in a symbolic place: pain, hope, love and death - and this is incredibly touchingly captured artistically on wooden panels. The impressive thing: Through the perspective of the various actors, one thing becomes visible, namely that faith itself inspires every person in a completely different way.

Creatively challenged

“Lord, forgive them, for they know not what they do,” these are the first words of Jesus after he was nailed to the cross. “Words that captivate and make you think,” explained Sandra Mäurer from Marzling Kreativ. And further: “We have undertaken the process of reflection and created the community art project 'Way of the Cross' in a challenging design process.”

And that is something to behold, as anyone who comes to the Marzlingen parish church of St. Martin over the Easter period will notice. Because there is the cross on the side area, powerful and imposing and at the same time fragile and full of the warmth of the heart that was put there by the artistic community. A total of seven artists each implemented two stations of the cross - and did so in very different ways, sometimes a little more abstract, sometimes realistic, but always very close to the given theme.

Another special feature: Each artist has written thoughts about his work, which can be found in an exhibition catalog and charmingly enriches the respective picture with the history of its creation and the thoughts behind it. The Marzlingen Way of the Cross is not just an extraordinary art project, but a rousing overall work in which image, language and your own freedom of interpretation mix.

Each individual work is overwritten and can definitely be seen as a highlight - for example with “Devotion”, “Weakness”, “Love” or “Falling”. In doing so, the artist community achieves a very special bravura feat: they bring the suffering of Jesus into the present day without leaving the historical context. Perhaps the most haunting two works on the cross: “Courage” by Sandra Mäuer, which shows Veronika drying the face of the battered Jesus. An image that includes everything - namely the haunting pain of Christ, but also the hope that someone will recognize the suffering and help. The second work, which goes deep to the heart: “Jesus accepts the cross” by Irmi Trautner. She chooses a blurred form of representation in order to give the running colors the symbolic power of tears, sweat and blood. Trautner's thoughts on this: "Life places terrible crosses on countless people: fear, hunger, illness, astonishment."

The three crosses

If you look closely, you will be able to find a continuous cipher in each painting, namely three crosses. Mäurer formulated his idea as follows: “It is the symbol of the crown of thorns and also a symbol of our collective work.” What the group of artists has achieved with this Stations of the Cross: Through modern illustrations and the discussion of Christ's last stations, they have created a work that will possibly be shown again and again at the time of the Passion from this year onwards.

What one would hope for: A traveling exhibition through the communities at Easter time so that this work of art inspires as many people as possible. The following artists worked on the Marzlingen Way of the Cross: Helmut Sauerer, Irmi Trautner, Illona Stübner, Nina Meder-Herteux, Christina Duffner, Sandra Mäuer and Waldtraud Iraschko.

The cross can be seen on Easter days in St. Martin's Church in Marzling, after which it will go to the parish hall.
