Shortly after 11 p.m. last Friday, a resident of Montereau raised the alarm. She has just seen a man setting fire to a trash can near Place du Colonel Fabien, located in downtown Montereau, near the confluence between the Yonne and the Seine. Having the suspect's description, the municipal police and the anti-crime brigade of the national police station quickly spotted the silhouette of a man. The latter holds a lighter in one hand and a large stone in the other… and he smells strongly of smoke.

At the sight of the police, he tries to get rid of the stone. Drunk, he admits the facts. The police have even less doubt about having arrested the arsonist since they had already arrested him at the beginning of March for a series of attacks committed in the city center.

Around ten stores damaged at the beginning of March

“This Monterelais was again arrested and judged on Monday. He is now placed on semi-release and therefore sleeps in prison, and has been banned from appearing in Montereau for 4 months, welcomes Mayor James Chéron (UDI) on Facebook. Let's hope that these sanctions, added to his obligation of care judged on March 7, will permanently dissuade him from doing it again! »

The elected official, who finally hopes to see an end to the trouble, also intends to highlight the role of the municipal Urban Supervisor Center, the effectiveness of which may have been questioned by certain traders who were victims of the first damage. At the beginning of March, the thirty-year-old had broken the windows of around ten shops, as well as those of the offices of James Chéron and the constituency deputy Jean-Louis Thiériot (LR). For these facts, he was sentenced on March 7 to 8 months in prison with a suspended probationary period. At the end of his trial, he emerged free with an obligation to care, work and compensate the victims.
