Robert F. Kennedy Jr. could tip the scales in the US election in the fall. Donald Trump sees this primarily as a problem for Joe Biden.
Washington DC - The US election in November 2024 is likely to see a repeat of the duel between US President Joe Biden and his predecessor Donald Trump. The two candidates fought a duel for the presidency in 2020 - with a known outcome. While Biden and Trump will probably decide to enter the White House between themselves, the independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is also up for election. Although Kennedy has no realistic chance of winning the election, he could steal valuable votes from Biden and Trump. The personnel issues have left their mark on Trump in particular.
Trump rails against Kennedy before the US election – “by far the most radical left-wing candidate”
The ex-president dedicated his own post to Kennedy on his own social media platform “Truth Social” on Wednesday evening. “RFK Jr. is by far the most radical left-wing candidate in the race,” Trump wrote, referring to the independent candidate. As justification, the Republican cited Kennedy's positions with regard to the “Green New Deal”, i.e. the efforts to initiate an ecological restructuring of the economic system. “He is a big fan of the 'Green New Scam' and other economic disasters

Philanthropist Nicole Shanahan, who RFK Jr. introduced as his running mate on Wednesday, is even more liberal than Kennedy himself, Trump claims in his post. Despite the harsh words against his competitor, the ex-president says he is calm about the US election in the fall. Because of Kennedy's political stance, Trump expects his competitor to lose votes. “I guess that would mean taking votes away from the dishonest Joe Biden, which would be a great service to America,” Trump continued.
Independent candidate in the US election: Robert F. Kennedy received support from the Republicans
A few months ago, however, Trump's assessment of Kennedy's policies sounded completely different. When RFK Jr. announced his intention to challenge Biden as the Democratic presidential candidate, he received praise from Trump. Kennedy was a “very smart man” who had his heart in the right place, the ex-president told the “Howie Carr’s radio show” in July 2023. Trump said he has had a “very nice relationship” with Kennedy over the last few years.
RFK Jrs. In the past, statements have repeatedly received approval from the radical Republican camps. Kennedy has been considered an opponent of vaccinations and a spreader of anti-science conspiracy stories for almost 20 years. Especially during the corona pandemic, RFK Jr. appeared as an opponent of vaccinations against the coronavirus and a vocal critic of Joe Biden's corona policy. A position that met with approval, particularly among Republicans.

Trump sees RFK Jr. as a means against Biden – “I love that he’s running for election”
“He is the political opponent of the dishonest Joe Biden, not mine. I love that he’s running for election!” Trump wrote at the end of his post on Truth Social. Non-Republican and Democratic candidates typically play minimal roles in U.S. presidential elections. In the 2020 US election, just 1.84 percent of the valid votes went to other candidates besides Biden and Trump.
However, since elections in the USA are based on a majority voting system, Kennedy could tip the scales, especially in the so-called swing states, and take decisive votes from one of the candidates. In 2020, Biden won the states of Georgia and Arizona by just under 10,000 votes.
The Kennedys are considered one of the most influential and well-known families in recent US history, as various entrepreneurs and politicians emerged from their ranks. The best-known member was former US President John F. Kennedy, who died in an assassination attempt in Dallas in 1963. His younger brother Robert F. Kennedy - RFK Jr.'s father - also sought to run for president in 1968, but also fell victim to an assassination attempt.
