Highlights: The left divided over France in the EU: “a good thing’ for Toussaint, “it depends” for Aubry. “France in the European Union is a good thing, even essential, because Europe is the right scale to lead the battles we have to wage,” argued Marie TousSaint. But Europe “must transform its economy because today we have an economy which destroys, which destroys the climate, which destroying nature’s biodiversity”

Guests on different radio stations this Friday morning, the heads of the environmentalist and rebellious European lists did not share the same point of view on France's place in the EU.

France in the EU is

“a good thing”

for the head of the environmentalist list in the European elections Marie Toussaint

“because Europe is the right scale to lead the fights”

while

“it depends on what to do”

for her rebellious competitor Manon Aubry (LFI).

“France in the European Union is a good thing, even essential, because Europe is the right scale to lead the battles we have to wage and in particular the fight against climate change

,” argued Marie Toussaint Friday on France inter.

But Europe

“must transform its economy because today we have an economy which destroys, which destroys the climate, which destroys nature, which destroys biodiversity”

, she added. To the same question about France in the EU, Manon Aubry replied

“it depends on what to do”

.

“If it is to obtain, for example, a European directive which gives protective status to millions of Uber workers

(...)

as we have obtained in recent months, against France moreover, it is is a good thing

,” she admitted.

“But if it’s for free trade treaties, if it’s forever more austerity (...) it’s not black or white

,” defended Manon Aubry who advocates

“ecological protectionism”

.

The two heads of lists, who succeeded one another on France Inter, also differed on their vision of the national impact of the elections of June 9.

“Jean-Luc Mélenchon is doing a form of parallel campaign where he talks to us about the presidential election

(...)

But we are not in Jean-Luc Mélenchon's fourth presidential election, we are in a European election”

, criticized Marie Toussaint. On the contrary, for Manon Aubry,

“this election will structure political life in the coming years. You will see if on the evening of June 9, the extreme right comes to power in Europe saying “Look, we arrived first”. Of course they will be at the gates of power tomorrow in France

.
