The defense of Ukraine without hesitation, but also the crisis in the Middle East, which further exploded after Iran's largely foiled attack on Israel: these are the dominant themes on the agenda of the G7 Foreign Ministers in Capri, for a meeting that will get underway tomorrow. But they will not be the only ones: the ministers of the seven will also address other hot topics on the international scene, such as cybersecurity - to which the fight against disinformation is linked - and the challenges posed by the very rapid development of artificial intelligence. And again: the more assertive attitude to have towards China, security in the Indo-Pacific area and the politically hot topic of illegal immigration. As well as of course the key challenge of climate change.
Alongside the Middle East and Ukraine, already politically cumbersome topics, the other topics that will cross collective conversations and even possible bilateral exchanges will therefore be no less relevant: reforms of the International Financial System, investments in developing countries and new partnerships aimed at conflict resolution and resilience to global challenges, in particular climate change. The G7 Foreign Affairs will aim to further strengthen ties with African nations (the Italian Mattei Plan has still been indicated as a model by German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock) aiming in a more operational and concrete way to promote economic prosperity on the continent. And this objective is also linked to the fight against irregular emigration, supported by transnational criminal groups, which actively hinders the G7's efforts to encourage prosperity in Africa and beyond. Therefore, international efforts should increase to tackle illegal migration at its roots, so that we can reduce travel organized by smugglers, protect lives and create growth.
A packed agenda, therefore, on which all ministers ask to find a collective line, which strengthens the role of the G7 in the face of the multiplication of global crises and transformations. In the past, this difficult synthesis has not always been possible, but with the increasingly numerous clouds gathering on the global scene, who knows if there isn't a significant step forward in Capri itself.
