The 'Oberpfaffenhofen Express': extension to Geltendorf?

2024-04-17T12:24:02.398Z

Highlights: Ten of 13 district councilors voted in favor of the connection last week. All requirements for funding are met - which means the costs for the district are significantly lower. However, the weakening of the existing LVG bus routes 91 (Finning/Windach/Geltendorf), 40 (Landsberg/Schondorf/inning) and 41 (Inning/Landedberg/G Beltendorf) is negative. The travel time from Geltendorf to Oberpfaffenhofen is still quite long at 52 minutes (from Windach 37 minutes). Almost 90 percent of those surveyed - those who work at the Oberpfaffenhofen special airport - are in favor of expanding the express bus line to Geltendorf. But the survey cannot tell how many people come, as it can't tell how long the line will be in use. The district has assured that feedback by the summer would be sufficient for a decision to be made by the end of the year.

So now: After the district committee clearly rejected an extension of the X910 express bus route to Geltendorf train station in January, ten of 13 district councilors voted in favor of the connection last week. One reason: All requirements for funding are met - which means the costs for the district are significantly lower.

The express line From Weßling, the expansion to the district communities including Stegen up to Geltendorf is planned. According to current planning, the bus service would arrive in Geltendorf every hour from 6:40 a.m. and leave from there again; the last bus would arrive in Geltendorf at 10:40 p.m.

Express bus X910 to Geltendorf: Better S-Bahn connection - but LVG lines will lose guests

This would also create a new connection to the S-Bahn in Weßling, argued public transport officer Philipp Wenninger. However, the weakening of the existing LVG bus routes 91 (Finning/Windach/Geltendorf), 40 (Landsberg/Schondorf/inning) and 41 (Inning/Landsberg/Geltendorf) is negative: “Passengers are being picked up there.” In addition, the necessary investments are missing then maybe somewhere else. Furthermore, the travel time from Geltendorf to Oberpfaffenhofen is still quite long at 52 minutes (from Windach 37 minutes).

What has changed compared to January is not only the willingness of the affected communities to provide funding, the possible funding and the cost reduction achieved as a result, but also the urgency of the deadline: In January it was still said that the district's decision had to be made immediately - District Administrator Thomas Eichinger (CSU) had warned at the time that the Starnberg district would probably not wait any longer - Starnberg has now assured that feedback by the summer would be sufficient.

There are also initial studies by the regional agency gwt-Starnberg on the potential demand for the line: According to this, almost 90 percent of those surveyed - those who work at the Oberpfaffenhofen special airport - are in favor of expanding the express bus line. Unfortunately, the survey cannot tell how many people come from the five district municipalities, says Wenninger. However, the question was how many employees regularly commute from the western districts of Landsberg, Augsburg, Ostallgäu and Oberallgäu. A good nine percent of the companies surveyed stated that 100 to 150 people commuted from these districts, a good two percent even said 250 or more people. Over 18 percent of companies still reported up to 50 commuters.

The big but: the co-financing of the project by the Free State and municipalities

The district committee's yes to participation in the bus route expansion with ten votes to three - after the no in January, which was passed with only one vote against - was subject to two reservations: on the one hand, the approval of the funding application. And on the other hand, the financing participation of the five municipalities that benefit from the expansion: Geltendorf, Greifenberg, Windach, Eresing and Eching). After the negative decision in January, their mayor contacted the district again and promised to share the costs - provided, of course, that the respective local councils agreed to this.

If the state funding and the participation of the municipalities come together in the amount previously envisaged, the costs for the district will be massively reduced, emphasizes Wenninger: Of the original 400,000 to 450,000 euros for a six-year award period for the line, 200,000 euros remain after state funding, after participation of the five municipalities around 100,000 euros that the district has to pay per year. The express line must be advertised across Europe by December 2025.

It has already been decided that the Landsberg district will join the MVV on January 1, 2025.
