Explosive missiles and drones continue to rain down on Ukraine daily. At least eight people were killed and 18 others injured in a triple Russian strike this Wednesday morning in Cherniguiv, a large city in northern Ukraine, according to a new statement from the city's mayor. “There are eight dead and 18 injured following Russian missile strikes on Cherniguiv. Search and rescue operations continue,” Mayor Oleksandre Lomako said on Telegram.
At 9:03 a.m. local time, “three explosions occurred in the city,” the mayor had indicated earlier on television. It was a “direct strike on a social infrastructure building,” he had previously said.
“Many injured”
The governor of the eponymous region, of which Cherniguiv is the capital, indicated that the attack had “almost” hit the city center, reporting “dead civilians” and “many injured”.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky subsequently estimated that his army had not been able to prevent the triple Russian strike on the city of Cherniguiv, due to a lack of air defense means due to the running out of Western military aid. “This would not have happened if Ukraine had received enough air defense equipment and if the world's determination to resist Russian terror had been sufficient,” he lamented on social media.
Cherniguiv, one of Ukraine's oldest cities, founded more than 1,000 years ago, had almost 300,000 inhabitants before the Russian invasion two years ago. It is located about sixty kilometers from the border with Belarus, an ally of Russia.
