A firefighter died unexpectedly in Memmelsdorf. His comrades and the community reacted with shock and dismay at the loss.
Memmelsdorf – It wasn’t a mission like any other. In the early hours of Saturday (April 13th), the Memmelsdorf fire department near Bamberg (Bavaria) had to go to a turntable ladder rescue in the Meedensdrof district of the municipality. But there was no rescue at all because the person in distress had already died. As can be seen from a Facebook post from the fire department on April 15, it was a fellow firefighter. The fire department reacted in shock.
Memmeldorf fire department can no longer do anything for comrades – “One of us”
When the firefighters arrived at the scene, they positioned the turntable ladder for the rescue as normal. “Unfortunately, we quickly received the sad news that we could cancel the turntable ladder rescue,” the fire department reported in the post.
Only at that moment did it become clear that the person being rescued was a firefighter. “One of us,” the fire department wrote on Facebook, expressing their sadness. “We are shocked and deeply regret that a fellow firefighter from our community and the Meedensdorf fire department died suddenly and unexpectedly. Our sincere condolences go out to his entire family, relatives and friends.” The firefighters then said goodbye to their deceased comrade. “We will always remember you fondly,” says the post, under which a fire engine can be seen in a black and white photo.

The community of Memmelsdorf also reacted to the firefighter's death on Facebook. “We are shocked and deeply regret the death of Erwin Holschuh – 1st board member of the volunteer fire department in Meedensdorf!” says a post in which the first mayor of Memmelsdorf, Gerd Schneider, is quoted. “Our sincere condolences go out to his entire family and all relatives,” continued Schneider.

The news of the firefighter's death also touched some Facebook users, who expressed their condolences in comments. “My heartfelt condolences, I wish the bereaved and also his comrades a lot of strength during this difficult time,” writes a user under the fire department’s post. “My condolences, you don’t want to have to experience this kind of effort…” commented another user.
A user who knew the deceased also responded to the community's post. “Oh no, he was my classmate in elementary school. Rest in peace Erwin,” it says. The deceased now leaves a big gap in the town. Back in December, the fire department in Jetzendorf in Upper Bavaria also had to cope with the sudden death of a comrade.
