Highlights: Summer 2024 marks a new increase in tourist flows in Italy. 35.5 million foreigners would opt for an Italian destination (+5% on 2023), equal to just over half of the overall figure of expected arrivals. A more optimistic scenario which could consolidate the overtaking even compared to the pre-pandemic period of 2019 with an increase in both arrivals (+6.8%) and overnight stays (+7.0%). "The upcoming summer season promises to be promising for Italian tourism, with an estimated growth of both arrivals and presences," says DemosKopika president Raffaele Rio. "It is more necessary than ever to adopt not only reactive but above all proactive strategies to meet the expectations of tourists, ensuring that the sector not only grows in quantity but also in quality," he adds. "Italy is also among the destinations with the lowest rate of tourist inflation, but the growing costs in critical areas like air transport, however, risk absorbing almost entirely the benefits of greater tourist spending."

As many as 65.8 million arrivals and over 266 million presences, with growth of 2.1% and 1.1% respectively compared to the same period in 2023.

The forecasts for the upcoming summer season Tourism ForecastSummer 2024 mark a new increase in tourist flows in Italy of the Demoskopika institute which ANSA publishes in preview. The foreign component weighs the most: 35.5 million foreigners would opt for an Italian destination (+5% on 2023), equal to just over half of the overall figure of expected arrivals, generating as many as 135.5 million overnight stays (+2.2%).

Furthermore, according to the president of Demoskopika Raffaele Rio, the occurrence of a "proactive" scenario could produce a bullish effect on the estimates: 70 million arrivals and 278.3 million presences with a growing variation, compared to the same period of 2023, equal to 8.8% and 5.8%. A more optimistic scenario which could consolidate the overtaking even compared to the pre-pandemic period of 2019 with an increase in both arrivals (+6.8%) and overnight stays (+7.0%). "The upcoming summer season - specifies Rio - promises to be promising for Italian tourism, with an estimated growth in both arrivals and presences. Although Italy is also among the destinations with the lowest rate of tourist inflation, the growing costs in critical areas like air transport, however, risk absorbing almost entirely the benefits of greater tourist spending, it is more necessary than ever to adopt not only reactive but above all proactive strategies expectations of tourists, ensuring that the sector not only grows in quantity but also in quality.

And this - concludes Raffaele Rio - could generate a more significant consolidation compared to pre-pandemic levels and establish new standards of success for tourism in Italy".
