Highlights: There is a lack of tourist infrastructure at Walchensee. The village shop closed in August 2023. Since then, simply buying fresh rolls has been impossible. A campsite operator now wants to close a supply gap. The issue of MVV is on the minds of every landlord, said club chairman Klaus Melf. The trip to Garmisch-Partenkirchen and back now costs 14 euros. The neighboring district of Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen will not join the MVV area until 2026. The problem will be solved if the RVO can recognize the tickets, said mayor Jens Müller, who confirmed an MVV meeting will be held on April 30th.

Walchensee – Vacationing in Walchensee is a mixed blessing: on the one hand, the landscape could hardly be more beautiful, and on the other hand, there is a lack of tourist infrastructure. The village shop closed in August 2023. Since then, simply buying fresh rolls has been impossible. Since the southern district of Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen joined the MVV area six months ago, guest card holders can no longer take the bus towards Garmisch-Partenkirchen for free. But there seems to be an improvement in both issues, as became clear at the annual meeting of the tourist association.

The topic of MVV is burning under the landlords' nails

The issue of MVV is on the minds of every landlord in Walchensee, said club chairman Klaus Melf. You can no longer travel for free in the direction of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, as the neighboring district will not join the MVV area until 2026. The trip to Garmisch-Partenkirchen and back now costs 14 euros. “In Einsiedl our guests basically hit a wall,” said Melf. “The changeover was a bit unfortunate for us.”

Those responsible at the tourist association had thought about writing a letter to the responsible authorities, but now a solution appears to be emerging. Mayor Jens Müller confirmed this. There will be an MVV meeting on April 30th: “If it is decided that the RVO can recognize the tickets, the problem will be solved. And that’s what it looks like at the moment.”

Walchensee: Worries about the lack of a village shop

The tourist association is also concerned about the lack of a village shop: “Nobody in our town wants to do a bulk purchase,” said Melf. “But if you can't get rolls, butter, jam or newspaper in a tourist town, then it's extremely difficult. Fresh rolls are a luxury that I want to have when I travel.” Sabine Gistl tried to revive the village shop, but she had to give up after a year. The reason was that sales were far too low. She hoped that a successor would be found and spoke to employees of the district office about this topic: “They just said: Ladies around the age of 50 always have such romantic ideas. At the beginning everyone is enthusiastic, and in the end they are left alone.” She was not disappointed about the end of the village shop, “because it was clear to me that it would happen that way. I can’t do it alone – I’m neither a retail clerk nor a baker.” However, the situation around the village shop could “change by the minute.”

Then Jürgen Garkisch joined the discussion: “We as campsite operators already do that anyway. We have rolls and newspapers fresh to order. If you need something like that, we are of course ready to do something, we can do it.” So far, the mini market at the campsite has not been advertised so as not to stand in the way of a possible village shop concept. Melf was pleased: “If there is a possibility, that would definitely be a good thing.”
