Buckingham Palace is a landmark and crowd puller in London. Why King Charles and the Royals aren't fans and what it's really like to live there.
London - Buckingham Palace in London has been the official residence of King Charles (75) and the British monarchs before him since 1837 - but no one has moved in for a long time. It is the ideal location for large ceremonial occasions, when crowds line the length of the Mall to see the king - formerly the queen - on the famous balcony. The real contradiction of this place is that it is not a home at all. King Charles announced his plans to move and repeatedly put them on hold.
Why King Charles isn't a fan of the palace and what it's really like to live there
Royal expert Hugo Vickers tells

that he assumes that King Charles will never move out of Clarence House.
Charles' current residence is a much nicer home, a magnificent townhouse with a large garden in the middle of London. Since becoming king, the monarch has often been seen making the short journey to Buckingham Palace and using it for formal occasions, meetings, receptions and state banquets.

“It is a mix of state rooms for formal occasions and offices for the staff who work there. Members of the royal family have rooms on different floors, accessed via a series of corridors - similar to a hotel. And that’s exactly what it looks like – a large, drafty Edwardian hotel,” the expert explains.
Queen Elizabeth II also valued Windsor Castle more than Buckingham Palace
Queen Elizabeth II (96, † 2022) also lived in Clarence House during her time and was completely happy there, but Winston Churchill (90, † 1965) insisted that she move into the palace because it was the monarch's official residence was. King Charles has fared better, with the palace currently undergoing an extensive restoration program he has every excuse to stay where it is.
Every weekend, the Queen and Prince Philip (99, †2021) went to Windsor Castle, which they really liked. In March 2020, she moved there permanently shortly before the lockdown and never spent another night in Buckingham Palace. Meanwhile, King Charles has opened the palace's doors further to visitors, allowing guests to catch a glimpse of the state rooms from the famous balcony.
