Balance sheet of child and youth work presented: Fahrenzhausen youth center needs more space

They are important contacts for many young people in Fahrenzhausen: Felix Beckert and Melek Yesilyurt. They presented their balance sheet of open child and youth work to the local council and also drew attention to deficits.

Fahrenzhausen

- A review of open child and youth work in Fahrenzhausen for 2023 and a preview of the challenges ahead were presented to the local councilors at the most recent meeting by Felix Beckert and Melek Yesilyurt from the Haimhausen youth work association. First, the two educators listed the tasks they perform at the special purpose association for Fahrenzhausen children and youth: the opening times in the youth center, the advice and support of children and young people, the creation and supervision of the holiday and youth program as well as public events and also the so-called Mobile work.

Many visitors' windows fog up

They also had numbers, graphics and photos of the youth center in Unterbruck with them. “In March 2023 we had 82 children and young people visiting. That’s a lot,” Yesilyurt explained the top of a corresponding curve graphic. It could happen that 50 young people are in the youth center at the same time on a Friday. In doing so, she directly addressed a challenge for the future: the problem of space. “For many visitors, the windows fog up and the air is not always good,” describes Beckert. The youth center urgently needs more rooms.

(By the way: Everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

Yesilyurt happily reported that the proportion of girls in the Fahrenzhausen youth center was quite high at 30 to 40 percent. It is often criticized that youth centers are generally dominated by boys. Another number that proves that youth work is in demand in Fahrenzhausen: 168 children and young people took part in the youth program last year. “The participants in events without registration, such as the children’s disco, are not included,” explained the educator.

Third open day desired

Felix Becker listed Corona aftercare, cannabis legalization, populism and social media as future challenges - in addition to the space problem. The two of them didn't have an easy start at their new job during the pandemic, but have now been able to "gain a foothold". The trust that young people have in their teachers, which is built up through continuity and persistence, is constantly growing. The educators not only sit in the youth center, but also spend a lot of time outside.

They would like to offer more events or open the youth center a third day a week - as many young people want. “But for that we would need more capacity and more working hours,” says Beckert. When asked by Annemarie Guttner (FW), he said: “Currently there are 1,300 hours a year, ideally 1,500 to 1,600 would be.”

The next step for the association is to organize holiday and youth programs and events such as the EU elections. Mayor Susanne Hartmann thanked the speakers for coming. “Your work is very important and we are pleased that you support us.” The councils are now taking Beckert and Yesilyurt’s input with them. It remains to be seen whether their wishes will be fulfilled.
