“moma” viewers were actually expecting a report on the UNESCO island of Reichenau – but the ZDF reporter suddenly had to struggle with the technology during the live broadcast.

Reichenau - On April 19th, the public broadcaster broadcast a report about the 12 km² island of Reichenau on Lake Constance in the “ZDF-Morgenmagazin”. 24 years ago, Reichenau was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site - many parts of the island are protected and the small island in Baden-Württemberg is still home to the Benedictine monks today. In 2024 Reichenau will celebrate its 1,300-year history. The big anniversary is being celebrated with a state exhibition and ZDF was there for it - but not everything seemed to go smoothly during the live broadcast.

“moma” viewers expect an exciting report – but the ZDF reporter has to struggle with technology

A mistake occurs during a live broadcast: just recently, NDR broadcast from an empty studio because the technical team stopped working due to a strike. And there was also a faux pas during a live broadcast in the “ZDF-Morgenmagazin”. ZDF reporter Sandra Susanka was on site in Reichenau and was supposed to give TV viewers an insight into the island and the anniversary celebrations celebrated there - but not everything went according to plan at the beginning.

After a short introduction by the ZDF reporter, a film followed with spectacular images showing the island of Reichenau in all its splendor. The public broadcaster then switched back to Sandra Susanka - but suddenly the picture stopped and the sound also stopped and was distorted.

“It jerks”: “ZDF-Morgenmagazin” apologizes for mistakes in the live broadcast

After the distorted live broadcast, ZDF switched back to the studio and the “Morgenmagazin” presenters spoke about the mistake: There was a technical error on the production side. “Unfortunately we had a few picture and sound problems. We apologize for that. “It was Sandra Susanka from the island of Reichenau,” said presenter Harriet von Waldenfels (39), and her TV colleague Mitri Sirin (53) accompanied her words with: “It jerks.”

But Harriet von Waldenfels assured the audience: “Hopefully we will switch to her again later with better technical quality.” And indeed – at around 8:19 a.m. ZDF tried it a second time and looked again at Sandra Susanka in Reichenau. This time it seemed to work without any problems. Incidentally, a “ZDF today” spokeswoman recently moderated her news program with imaginary words - but there were no reactions online to this strange incident at the time.
