It's bitterly cold outside, and it's not just people who are freezing. The Hebertshausen master gardener Georg Roth gives tips on how flowers that have already been planted can still survive.

District

– The warm temperatures last weekend made me want to do gardening. Many gardening enthusiasts stocked up on colorful spring flowers and eagerly planted pots and beds. Now the cold snap is coming. What to do with the flowers?

“Snow and night frost are the death of flowers,” says master gardener Georg Roth from the nursery of the same name in Hebertshausen. For him, the cold snap comes as no surprise, “it’s appropriate for the time of year.” The warm temperatures of the last few weeks, however, are unusual for the 45-year-old, who is the third generation to run the nursery. That's why the specialist recommended his customers to wait before buying the plants and flowers. A service that Roth and his colleagues from specialist gardeners in the city and district of Dachau always offer - detailed advice.

Which plants and flowers suit me and my living and garden situation? What do I do with it when winter comes and I have no place to overwinter? Here too, the specialist companies have tailor-made solutions. Customers’ plants can overwinter in the Roth nursery. Around 2,000 plants from 180 customers are currently stored in the Hebertshauser nursery. Deliveries will increasingly begin at the end of April - just when the risk of night frost decreases.

Don't start buying plants until next week at the earliest

Georg Roth always keeps an eye on the weather forecast these days. And for this reason, he is currently advising his customers not to start buying in bulk. You shouldn’t start gardening until the middle of next week at the earliest. The ice saints in May are no longer “as relevant” compared to before due to climate change, emphasizes the master gardener.

But the drop in temperature these days can cost the lives of the flowers that have already been planted. Anyone who has already been tempted to buy by colorful brochures and cheap offers can protect their plants: “Either bring them in or cover them up,” advises Roth. According to the expert, you can definitely protect what has already been planted with a cardboard box or fleece.

And if you want to make sure that you buy the right plants at the right time next year, it's best to go to a local nursery specialist. On the open garden day at the end of April, the Roth nursery will also open its doors, on Friday, April 26th, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday, April 27, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Then even the worst frost, constant rain and cool temperatures should slowly disappear. And this weekend we will also reveal which plant of the year is this year.
