Princess Kate and King Charles' cancer diagnosis: "Future of the monarchy hangs by a thread"

2024-04-19T11:19:45.304Z

Highlights: The death of Queen Elizabeth (1926–2022) would mark the end of an era for the British royal family. The conflict-ridden departure of Prince Harry (39) and Duchess Meghan (42) and the serious allegations against Prince Andrew (64) have caused enormous damage to the royal family in recent years.

According to aristocratic experts, the health problems of the British royals could cause serious problems for the throne in the long term.

London – The British royals may have to worry about their future. It had been clear for many years in the United Kingdom that the death of Queen Elizabeth (1926–2022) would mark the end of an era. Since then, King Charles (75) and his close relatives have tried all the harder to keep the population on their side even after the extremely popular monarch's death. They were faced with a rather difficult task, as the British royals were already plagued by a number of scandals during Elizabeth's lifetime. Both the conflict-ridden departure of Prince Harry (39) and Duchess Meghan (42) and the serious allegations against Prince Andrew (64) have caused enormous damage to the royal family in recent years.

Charles and Kate's cancer diagnoses pose a challenge for the Royal Family

According to experts, the fact that two particularly important royals are now suffering from cancer at the same time could potentially put the future of the monarchy in serious danger. After King Charles went public with his diagnosis at the beginning of February, Princess Catherine (42) also had to announce her cancer after numerous speculations about her absence. Journalist Tina Brown (70) explained in a recent essay for the New York Times that Charles' health brought his firstborn Prince William (41) and his family "frighteningly close" to the throne.

Actually, says Brown, William and Kate planned to raise their three children George (10), Charlotte (8) and Louis (5) away from the spotlight for as long as possible. The fact that in the worst case scenario they would soon have to take over the crown is an absolute horror idea for the Prince and Princess of Wales. “The prospect of this, I hear, causes them extreme anxiety,” Brown writes in her article.

Princess Catherine has great importance for the British monarchy

There is a lot of pressure on Princess Kate in particular. After her husband William, the mother of three is the most popular member of the Royal Family and the British population is currently eagerly awaiting her return from cancer treatment. Tina Brown continues: “The future of the monarchy hangs by a thread and that thread is her.”

But it looks like royal fans will have to wait a while until their favorites return to the flashlights. King Charles was also recently represented several times by his wife Queen Camilla (76). And in general, Buckingham Palace seems to be in a state of flux at the moment. Among other things, Prince Edward (60), the king's youngest brother, took over the honorary title of "Colonel of the Scots Guards" on Sunday (April 14) from his namesake, the Duke of Kent (88). Queen Elizabeth's cousin had held the post since 1974 and, as a colonel in the Scottish Guards, visited British troops in Iraq and Afghanistan in 2008, among other things.

Speaking of the British royals: It is the first statement that Princess Kate has made after her cancer message. It is a message full of compassion.
