Maserati MC20 Cielo, closer to the stars

2024-04-20T00:13:21.678Z

TEST - Derived from a sensational supercar, this spyder reconnects with the elegance and sporting sensations of the best GTs from the trident firm.

The show begins when the elytra doors open. Pointed towards the sky, they reveal the carbon fiber monocoque structure. An architecture reserved for the elite of sportswomen. The theatrical staging continues when the roof is retracted. In twelve seconds, the headgear lifts back in one piece to take its place in a housing above the engine. The operation is carried out via a button located in the multimedia system. It is still through the touch screen that the opacity of the electrochromatic glass roof can vary. And as on all GTs of this caliber, with the roof closed, it is possible to enjoy the sounds of the engine thanks to the presence of a sliding rear window.

From the MC20 Berlinette from which it derives, this Spyder borrows the new 3-liter twin-turbo Nettuno V6. Installed in a central rear position, this engine accommodates, a first in series, a double combustion with pre-chamber borrowed from F1. This ignition principle makes it possible to improve efficiency and specific power.

Comfort above all

Some may criticize it for being a little hollow at low revs and for a subdued character compared to a Ferrari engine, but it does not lack temperament, provided you switch to Sport or Corsa modes from the new rotary located on the central tunnel. Controlled manually from the end of the fixed paddles behind the steering wheel, the 8-speed dual-clutch gearbox then gains speed. More GT than true sports car, the MC20 is appreciated more at a lively pace than at a frenzied pace. The steering appears too assisted and the carbon-ceramic discs do not have the desired bite to let go. Finally, you will have to plan to travel light, the trunks only offering 150 liters, and accept a penalty of 60,000 euros.
