Germany's most successful gymnast Marcel Nguyen has canceled his participation in the home world championships in Stuttgart due to a shoulder injury. "This was the hardest decision of my life," said the 32-year-old. "However, the units in Kienbaum have shown that participating in the World Cup unfortunately makes no sense and I can not help the team as I would have liked."
Nguyen labored for weeks on a tear of the supraspinatus tendon in the left shoulder and hoped to last on his participation in the world title battles from 4 to 13 October in his adopted country. It would have been his ninth World Cup and the second home World Cup after 2007 in Stuttgart.
Now, Nguyen is undergoing surgery on the shoulder next week, hoping to end his international career next year with the Tokyo Olympics. Nguyen had won two silver medals at the London Games and also won three gold and three bronze medals.
