Robert Kubica remains in Formula 1 - but no longer as a regular driver. After leaving the traditional Williams team, the 35-year-old Pole will be substitute driver for Alfa Romeo in the coming season. The Italian racing team announced this. Former world champion Kimi Räikkönen and Antonio Giovinazzi are starting as a regular duo for the former Sauber team.
Kubica sustained serious injuries to his right arm, among other things, in a rally accident in 2011, and amputation was only just prevented. The Pole, who was considered a great talent and candidate for a Ferrari cockpit at the time, had to end his Formula 1 career first.
After a few assignments in the sports car sector, for example, Kubica got a contract with Williams for the past season, but there he was mostly clearly overshadowed by his British team-mate George Russell. Kubica's cockpit at Williams will be taken over by Canadian Nicholas Latifi in 2020.
