Bochum (dpa) - Hamburger SV averted a setback in the fight for promotion to the Bundesliga.
The team of coach Dieter Hecking came to VfL Bochum on Monday evening despite a 0: 1 deficit in the final phase to a 3: 1 (0: 0) victory and again moved past VfB Stuttgart to second place in the 2nd League.
Bochum took the lead through Simon Zoller (65.) before Tim Leibold (68.), substitute Joel Pohjanpolo (74.) and Sonny Kittel (87.) turned the game in front of 24,421 spectators. While the Hanseates remained closely on the heels of the leader Arminia Bielefeld, Bochum is still in the highest risk of relegation on the 16th place in the table.
After the yellow-red card for regular goalkeeper Manuel Riemann in Bielefeld (0: 2), ex-Würzburg player Patrick Drewes made his first competitive appearance for VfL and showed a solid performance in his second division debut.
As expected, the Hanseatic had more of the game, but radiated little risk of scoring. The hosts had the best chance in the 10th minute when Vitaly Janelt came free to shoot and HSV goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes forced a parade. Then Janelt saved in his own penalty area when he threw himself into a shot by Sonny Kittel (27). Shortly before the break, both teams had another opportunity to take the lead: First, Silvère Ganvoula failed from an acute angle to Heuer Fernandes (37.), on the other hand Adrian Fein hit the post (39.).
After the change, the Revierclub fired up field benefits from the VfL fans. In the end, however, it failed: A shot by Simon Zoller (52.) was blocked in the last second, Janelt (55.) distorted. Only in the last 25 minutes did the goals fall: At first Bochum cheered the 1-0, but in the end the HSV had the staying power and also the necessary luck.
