The anticipation is huge: Viktoria Rebensburg starts on the Kandahar in Garmisch-Partenkirchen this weekend and wants to get back on the road to success.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen - It is particularly loud at the Ski World Cup in Garmisch-Partenkirchen when the German skiers are on the slopes. The mood is great - but so is the pressure to start in front of your own audience. Viktoria Rebensburg (SC Kreuth) will feel this again at the weekend. The departure is scheduled for Saturday at 11:30 a.m. and on Sunday at 11:15 a.m. the Super-G.

Viktoria Rebensburg finished on the podium in Garmisch

The 30-year-old has had a podium finish on the legendary Kandahar piste so far, in 2017 she was third in the downhill. "I have a lot of wonderful memories of the Kandahar," says Rebensburg. "And Thomas Dreßen presented last week and showed that it is best to be able to cheer on the podium in front of your own audience." The Mittenwalder won the Kandahar downhill a week ago - as the first German since Markus Wasmeier from Schliersee in 1992 (we reported). Rebensburg followed the race from Sochi.

Viktoria Rebensburg: "Of course, the anticipation is huge"

“Even from a distant Russia, the conditions and mood looked great. I hope that the fans will support us as well, ”says the Kreutherin. "The anticipation for Garmisch-Partenkirchen is of course huge." Rebensburg's last top position was a while ago. At the slalom in Courchevel, France, in mid-December, she finished fourth.

No conversation with Alpine manager Wolfgang Maier yet

A lot has happened on and off the slopes in the meantime. The argument with Wolfgang Maier (59) continues to smolder. As reported, the Alpine Director of the German Ski Association (DSV) accused Rebensburg of not training enough giant slalom intensely. At the edge of the World Cup in Garmisch-Partenkirchen there would be the possibility of a debate. Rebensburg was already in contact with Maier, but no detailed discussion has yet taken place. "It wasn't quite right for me because it is such a cool weekend when I just want to concentrate on skiing," says the Kreutherin. "It's not a thing I want to do between door and hinge."

Support comes from the fan club

Rebensburg wants to get back on the road to success in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. This winter she has already shown that she can compete in the front in the speed disciplines. She won the Super-G in Lake Louise in Canada at the beginning of December and finished fourth in the downhill. Also in the only downhill training in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Rebensburg showed a good trip on Friday. She finished second and was only 0.19 seconds slower than the fastest Corinne Suter from Switzerland.

The support from home is certainly Rebensburg at the races in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. "There are 29 fans on Saturday, 23 on Sunday," says Monika Echtler from Viktoria Rebensburg fan club. “Some of them come from the Ore Mountains and even from France.” After all, they are the only two home races for the Kreutherin.
