Handball (Champions League): three things to know before Celje - PSG

2020-02-09T08:58:11.865Z

The French champion finds, this Sunday (17f), the competition with a trip to Slovenia where it should not be negligent.

They were left on a defeat (32-35) in early December at home against Barcelona. We find them this Sunday in Slovenia. After the inglorious break of the French team at the European championship, the Champions League is back in the PSG players' calendar (3rd in the ranking), with a move to Celje (6th). The opportunity to take precious points for the 8 th finals.

Parisians are in good shape

For the resumption of the championship last Thursday, the champion of France had a serious test to pass in Toulouse, one of the surprises of the competition. Led (16-17) at the break, Raul Gonzalez's players tightened their defense to secure their 14th victory in as many games. In attack, the Spanish coach can count on Mikkel Hansen (10 goals Thursday), still as regular, and on a fiery Dylan Nahi (8 goals). Behind, Luka Karabatic's return to the field is also conclusive. In short, confidence reigns.

Celje, an opponent not to be overlooked

Admittedly, his only title in the Champions League dates from… 2004. It would nevertheless be a mistake to underestimate the multiple champion of Slovenia (23 titles, including the last six to date). First of all because Celje, 6th provisional in the classification, is not yet officially qualified for the 8th finals (March 18). Then because Slovenian handball comes out of a European championship where it stood out by taking 4th place (beaten by Norway), even if only three internationals are playing at Celje.

Minister's program

Still in contention on four fronts, PSG started on Thursday a hellish series of matches, almost one every three days until March 1. Including this Sunday, there are four in the Champions League (Celje, Szeged on February 16, Elverum on 22, and Zagreb on 01/03), and three in the league (Aix on February 12, Créteil on 19, and Nantes on 27). For the quarterfinals of the Coupe de France (against Dunkirk) and the half of the Coupe de la Ligue (against Toulouse), it will not be until mid-March. Just before the knockout stages of the Champions League.
