Antholz (dpa) - Even in the second race, the German biathletes remained without a medal at the World Cup in Antholz, Italy. Denise Herrmann came fifth in the women's sprint as the best German ski hunter.
Thanks to an outstanding mileage, the 31-year-old was able to dream of bronze for a long time despite three penalties in the sprint competition. However, the later bronze winner Lucie Charvátová from the Czech Republic and the Ukrainian Olena Pidhruschna pushed the Saxon into fifth place in the end.
After 7.5 kilometers, Herrmann was 30.5 seconds behind the new world champion Marte Olsbu Roeiseland from Norway, who had to run a penalty loop. Second in the South Tyrol Arena was the American Susan Dunklee, who remained flawless. In the end, only 9.2 seconds were missing for bronze. Herrmann showed the best performance of all starters on the trail.
In Antholz the men's sprint continues on Saturday (2.45 p.m. / ZDF and Eurosport). Ex-world champion Benedikt Doll is one of the favorites. The Black Forest wants to challenge the dominators Johannes Thingnes Bö from Norway and Martin Fourcade from France. Arnd Peiffer, who won more than ten kilometers in 2018 in Pyeongchang, has outsider chances.
