Munich (AP) - Bundesliga leader FC Bayern Munich will have to do without injured striker Robert Lewandowski in the next four weeks. So the pole is missing the record champion in the DFB Cup quarterfinals 3 March at FC Schalke 04.
Lewandowski suffered in the first knockout round of the Champions League "a crack in the shinbone edge on the left knee joint", the club said. Lewandowski, goal scorer in London to 3-0, is missing in three weeks in the second leg against Chelsea. In the important Bundesliga games at Borussia Dortmund (April 4) and then at Bayer Leverkusen, the striker should then be there again.
The leg will now be immobilized with a plaster cast for ten days, after which the training should begin, the club said. The Bayern star tops the Bundesliga goalscorer list with 25 goals ahead of Leipzig's Timo Werner (21) - the renewed break could mean a setback in the battle for the goalscoring cannon.
Lewandowski had already had an operation at the end of the year. Just a few hours after Munich's 2-0 home win in the Bundesliga against VfL Wolfsburg, the 31-year-old was operated on the left groin. Only 29 days after the intervention Lewandowski was back in the starting line-up when the Munich team won at Hertha BSC. He had left out the Bavaria training camp in Qatar and worked on his return in Munich, he had not missed a competitive game during this time.
