The women and the double-seaters remain the guarantors of victory in German luge sport. Oberwiesenthaler Julia Taubitz won the overall World Cup on Saturday for the first time in her career and was able to continue the successful streak of German women that has been going on for 22 years. The 23-year-old sufficed a second place behind team-mate and surprise winner Anna Berreiter (Berchtesgaden) in the finale at Königssee. "I can't believe it yet. It's a wonderful feeling," said Taubitz, who benefited from the fact that the leading Russian Tatiana Ivanova only finished sixth and fell eight points behind Taubitz in the overall classification.
The double-seaters had the expected German success: Toni Eggert / Sascha Benecken (Ilsenburg / Suhl) also won the overall classification in the World Cup after their World Cup title in Sochi, ahead of their teammates from Berchtesgaden Tobias Wendl / Tobias Arlt. "It was a great finale. In such situations you are a bit under pressure. But we did a good job," said Eggert, who, with his partner, was able to secure victory in the classification for the fourth time in a row.
Even Felix Loch, who did not win the World Cup this season, was not unhappy about his fourth place on Sunday. "I can be satisfied with that this season," said the six-time world champion, who secured victory in the relay with Berreiter and Eggert / Benecken.
