Coronavirus: No Premier League before (at best) April 30

2020-03-19T15:01:52.690Z

Unsurprisingly, British leaders announced on Thursday that a return to the Premier League would not be effective for several weeks.

It is all speculation. And questions. In the end, nobody knows very well when life, and football matches, will resume their usual rhythm in the coming weeks. It is in this context that the leaders of the Premier League, the most lucrative football championship in the world, decided to extend the suspension of the season until April 30, while committing to bring it to an end. Clearly, no one is more advanced as to the resumption of football matches with our English neighbors. Logical, given the total blur that has taken hold of the Old Continent in recent days.

"We have decided that professional matches in England will be postponed until at least April 30," said the statement after a teleconference meeting between the federation, the English Football League and representatives from the men's and women's championships. The purpose of the meeting was to concretize the instructions for "social distancing" advocated by the government to slow the spread of the coronavirus. After long procrastinating, the English football authorities had initially suspended the progress of the season until April 3. After UEFA's decision to postpone the Euro for a year, to the summer of 2021 - a decision unanimously welcomed by the meeting's participants - English football has reaffirmed its will to bring the current season to a close, "As soon as it is possible to do it safely".

"The evolution of the Covid-19 remains uncertain and we want to assure everyone that the health and well-being of the players, staff and supporters are our priority," added the federation. FA rules state that "the season must not end later than June 1". But "the board of directors (of the federation) has decided to extend this limit indefinitely for the 2019/2020 season of professional football", explains the press release. The Premier League season was interrupted when the title seemed promised to Liverpool, with a 25-point lead 9 days to go over Manchester City, which has one game less. For Europe, the suspense is total, since there are only 9 points between Chelsea, 4th, and Crystal Palace 11th, while for relegation, Brighton, 15th is only 2 steps ahead of the first relegation, Bournemouth.
