THE SCAN SPORT - In a New York city hit hard by the Coronavirus pandemic, the US Open complex is being transformed to accommodate unaffected patients to relieve congestion in the city's hospitals.

Some places are more affected than others by the Coronavirus pandemic. New York State and mainly its megalopolis hold this sad title. Thus, if the United States has become the country most affected by Covid-19 in the number of positive cases (163,000), half appeared in New York State while Governor Andrew Cuomo announced Monday evening to deplore nearly 67,000 cases (38,000 in New York City alone) and 1,200 deaths.

350 beds installed in a training court

To great ills, great remedies. When sports arenas around the world begin to open their doors for different uses, but always with a view to fighting the pandemic, "Big Apple" follows suit. For example, at Flushing Meadows in Queens, where the tennis world moves every year at the end of August, a medical center has been set up on the site of the US Open. As of this Tuesday, an indoor training court will turn into a reception center where 350 beds will be installed as revealed by the Wall Street Journal .

Initially, patients who are not affected by Covid-19 will be treated there in particular by army corps. In addition, the Louis Armstrong court - the largest second court of all the Majors - will also be transformed, this time into a giant cafeteria where some 25,000 meal trays will be distributed each day to patients, caregivers, children of public schools located in the surrounding area and to all those in need. "We are here to help and if our infrastructure in Queens can be of service to New Yorkers, then we are ready," said Chris Widmaier, spokesperson for the American Tennis Federation (USTA).

Like other sports temples in the United States like the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami or the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay transformed into a "drive-in", the mobilization of sport across the Atlantic is adequate in the face of the emergency of the situation. And like everyone else, New Yorkers hope that sport will soon resume its rights. As of August 24, the day on which qualifying for the US Open begins? "Our great hope is that the US Open will take place as planned at the end of August and that New York will once again be able to welcome the whole world," assured Chris Widmaier. The traditional last Grand Slam of the year is not currently threatened (August 31 to September 13) by the Coronavirus pandemic. However, it is unpredictable, we understood very well in the country of Uncle Sam.
